Building Energy Rating becomes compulsory in Ireland

From Thursday January 1st, all buildings in Ireland will require a BER certificate before they can be sold or rented.

A  Building energy rating (BER) is similar to the energy rating of a household appliance and will be issued on a scale of A to G.
BER’s are administered in Ireland, under an EU directive, by Sustainable Energy Ireland and have been required for all newly built properties since mid 2008.

It is expected that BER’s will have a significant impact on the value of properties as running costs can vary significantly depending on the rating earned.

Property owners, what to do:

If you are selling or letting any property from January 1st, you will need a BER certificate. To get a BER cert you will need to contact a BER Assessor.
BER assessors are trained and authorised by SEI and certified for one year at a time.
