A new visa is to be introduced to allow an exchange of travel between Irish and US citizens. Irish people will be allowed to work and travel in the US for up to 12 nmonths with US citizens allowed to do likewise in Ireland.
The Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Michael Martin, signed the agreement in Washington DC today.
Around 20,000 visas are expected to be issued to Irish citizens annually with around 5,000 American citizens expected to come to work and vacation in Ireland for a year.
Speaking from Washington, Minister Martin said that this was a significant agreement:
“It’s the first formal legal framework for Irish people to travel to the United States to work for any reasonable time-frame apart from the student summer visas. Given the historic nature of our relationship (with America), we believe it’s important that we create legal frameworks for people that work in our respective countries,” he said
