Asgard evacuated

The Irish navy have confirmed that their flagship training vessel the Asgard II has been evacuated in the Bay of Biscay as it is sinking.

The vessel that started taking in water just off the French coast overnight sent a distress signal from at around 2am.

Five crew members plus 20 trainees evacuated the ship in lifeboats and were later rescued by the French coastguard.

The Asgard II, A brigantine, she was was commissioned in March 1981 having been designed and built in Arklow. County Wicklow by Jack Tyrrell.
