To the delight of the one or 2 Liverpool fans among us here at myguideIreland Robbie Keane has signed from Tottenham on a four-year deal.
Liverpool announced the deal on Monday after the captain of Ireland passed a medical with the Merseyside club. Tottenham said it agreed to a €23.7million transfer fee at the weekend, after the striker decided to accept an offer to join the club that he supported when growing upn in Dublin.
Liverpool needed to strengthen its attacking options following the departure of England’s Peter Crouch to Portsmouth. Manager Rafael Benitez is relying on Keane to forge a potent partnership with Fernando Torres.
Chairman of Tottenham, Daniel Levy, expressed disappointment at the transfer, saying Spurs were forced into selling Keane.
“I have already made my opinion clear on the nature of this transaction,” Levy said. “I don’t regard it as a transfer deal – that is something which happens between two clubs when they both agree to trade – this is very much an enforced sale.”
The 28-year-old Keane has been with Tottenham for 6 years, his longest spell with any club following spells at Wolves, Coventry, Inter Milan and at Leeds, and in the season just past became the 15th Tottenham player to score 100 goals for the club.
Keane is Ireland’s record holding scorer with 33 international goals.
