Arthurs Day From Guinness

Diageo PLC, the owners of GUINNESS® beer, the world’s number one stout, announced today an additional line-up of artists joining the Arthur’s Day celebrations on 23rd September 2010.

Joining Snow Patrol, Sharon Shannon and Paolo Nutini will be some of the hottest musicians of the moment including The Killers’ Brandon Flowers, Kelis, Plan B, KT Tunstall and Newton Faulkner.
Arthur’s Day was created in 2009 to mark the iconic brand’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the lease on St. James’s Gate by the iconic beer’s famous philanthropist founder, Arthur Guinness. The 2009 celebrations saw consumers across every continent enjoy over 60 live music acts whilst raising millions of pints of GUINNESS in a “celebration with substance”. This year’s event will continue to support the Arthur Guinness Fund, building on the good work that has already started in supporting social entrepreneurship around the world.
In addition, GUINNESS is announcing that for Arthur’s Day 2010 there will be live music events in Ireland, the USA, the Caribbean and Asia. In Ireland over 60 artists will perform across the country with the celebrations beginning at 17:59 local time with a global toast to Arthur Guinness and his remarkable legacy. Consumers will be able to enjoy the celebration at over 30 venues across Dublin, Cork and Galway from intimate gigs in pubs to music venues and a concert at the St. James’s Gate brewery itself.
In the United States Arthur’s Day celebrations will kick off with a “To Arthur” group toast with approximately 10,000 consumers at GUINNESS Oysterfest in Chicago. Celebrations will also take place across the country where consumers will come together to raise a GUINNESS “To Arthur.”
Asia and Malaysia will again be celebrating Arthur’s Day with a large concert in Kuala Lumpur. Fans can expect an electrifying night of live music performances to take centre stage during this year’s Arthur’s Day in Kuala Lumpur – all in a massive tribute to Arthur Guinness and his extraordinary legacy.
In the Caribbean, consumers will have the chance to attend Arthur’s Day concerts across the region. Consumers will have the opportunity to win tickets to these concerts as well as join together to raise a GUINNESS and toast “To Arthur” across the region.
KT Tunstall, said: “Looking forward to being a part of this years’ Arthur Guinness celebrations, and will very willingly raise a glass of the black stuff to the man himself.”
Brian Duffy, Global Brand Director for Guinness, said: “Arthur’s Day is once again going to be a global ‘celebration with substance’ that will see performances from some fantastic acts and musicians across the globe. Happy Arthurs Day

Today is ‘Arthur’s Day’.  Right across the world, celebrations for the GUINNESS 250 anniversary will reach their peak, marking the birthday of one of Ireland’s most famous and enduring brands.  These celebrations are helping to focus the spotlight on this island’s history, culture and heritage and encourage more visitors to come here.

In Dublin, festivities will begin today at 17:59, with a star-studded line-up, and they’ll carry on around the world from Lagos, to Kuala Lumpur and New York.  In addition, the celebrations in Ireland and other countries will be beamed to global audiences through SKY, ITV2 and DirecTV.

Tourism Ireland has been doing its bit, throughout the year, promoting ‘Arthur’s Day’ and the GUINNESS 250 as an additional, and very special, reason to visit the island of Ireland this autumn.

Imaginative programmes have run throughout the world in partnership with the Guinness Storehouse, Dublin Tourism and others.

Leixlip, Guinness plant under threat

The future of British drinks maker Diageo Plc’s planned Leixlip brewery is under threat after the brewer announced yesterday that it plans to ‘re-evaluate’  it’s €650 million euro ($865 million) investment program for County Kildare in light of the economic downturn.
Diageo said last year it would build the new brewery while cutting output and selling surplus land at St James’s Gate in Dublin, where Arthur Guinness started brewing Guinness Stout 250 years ago in 1759.

The recent collapse of land values has resulted in the potential benefit from selling the centre city land in Dublin City being considerably reduced.
